How Much Does a Personal Trainer Course Cost in the UK?

A personal trainer course in the UK costs between £500 and £2,499 in 2026, depending on the provider, the delivery format and what happens after you qualify. Most combined Level 2 and Level 3 courses sit between about £1,150 and £1,850 at full price. The lowest-priced CIMSPA Enhancing Status route we found is the YOUR Academy PT Career Accelerator at £500, which also includes a guaranteed placement once you qualify.

YOUR Academy publishes this guide and is one of the providers in it. Prices for other providers are as published by each provider in October 2026. Prices change, so check with the provider before you enrol.

What does a UK personal trainer course include for the price?

A credible UK personal trainer course bundles five things: the Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification (normally a prerequisite), the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification, tutor support, assessments and resits, and some form of help after you qualify. Higher-priced providers tend to add in-person workshops and mentoring. Online-only courses usually give you the qualifications and assessments, and stop there.

Every recognised Level 3 qualification is regulated by Ofqual and awarded by an awarding organisation, which keeps the core standard consistent from one provider to the next. What differs is the depth of teaching, how many practical hours you get, the support while you study, and what happens the day after you pass. For every step from first course to first client, see our guide on how to become a personal trainer.

What is the average price of a personal trainer course?

Among the other providers in the table below that publish a combined Level 2 and Level 3 price, the middle of the market is around £1,400 at full price. Online-only courses sit at the lower end, blended courses with workshops in the middle, and in-person or fast-track courses at the top. When we checked, several providers were advertising sizeable discounts, so the price you're offered is often lower than the full price. The YOUR Academy PT Career Accelerator sits well below the market at £500 because it's built around a placement rather than course-only pricing, and YOUR Academy still holds CIMSPA Enhancing Status.

Level 2 is normally a prerequisite for Level 3, so most providers sell the two together. YOUR Academy's PT Essentials combines both for £1,495, which saves £566 against buying them separately. For what each level lets you do in practice, see our guide on the difference between Level 2 and Level 3.

Why do personal trainer course prices vary so much?

Two courses at the same price can give you very different educations, because the headline fee bundles four separate things.

Accreditation tier

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is the UK professional body for fitness. It rates the training providers it endorses on three quality tiers, and CIMSPA Enhancing Status is the highest, and only a small number of UK providers hold it. YOUR Academy is one of them. Our guide to why CIMSPA accreditation matters explains what the tiers mean when you're comparing prices.

Delivery format

Online-only courses cost less to run, so they cost less to buy. Blended courses, which mix online study with in-person workshops, sit in the middle. Full-time, in-person diplomas sit at the top.

Support while you study

Tutor access, marking turnaround, workshop hours and resits are included in the fee at some providers and charged as extras at others. Ask any provider for the total, all-in cost in writing before you enrol.

Support after you qualify

This is where the gap is widest. Some providers stop at the certificate. Some offer a guaranteed interview. YOUR Academy places you straight into a working gym. A guaranteed placement is the difference between qualifying and earning, and it's why the PT Career Accelerator is priced the way it is.

Prices are each provider's full published price, as of October 2026. Many providers run time-limited offers, so the price you pay may be lower. Where a provider doesn't publish a price, the table says so. CIMSPA status is shown only where the provider states it; otherwise check the CIMSPA directory. Check current prices and course details with the provider before you enrol.

For broadly the same Level 3 qualification, full prices run from £500 to £2,499. Most of the providers here state CIMSPA recognition at very different prices, so price on its own tells you little about quality. Compare what each price includes: both levels or one, workshops, resits, and what happens after you qualify. For how these providers compare on career support and course format as well as price, see our guide to the best personal trainer courses in the UK.

Why is the PT Career Accelerator only £500?

The PT Career Accelerator costs £500 because it's built around a placement. In return for the lower fee, you commit to working as a self-employed personal trainer with YOUR Personal Training for at least six months once you qualify. Your first six weeks there carry no gym rent, so you've got time to build a client base before facility costs start.

The £500 covers the Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications, expert in-person workshops, blended online learning and the guaranteed placement at one of 420+ UK gyms and health clubs. You can pay in full, or pay a £250 deposit and then three monthly payments of £83.34, £83.33 and £83.33.

That's the trade. If you want to qualify and go straight into a gym, it's the lowest-cost route on the market. If you'd rather not commit to a placement, a standard course like PT Essentials is the better fit.

Does a lower price mean a lower standard?

No. YOUR Academy holds CIMSPA Enhancing Status, the highest of CIMSPA's three quality tiers. The courses are bespoke, built by Kevin Baker, YOUR Academy's Academy Director, and approved by Transcend Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation. You study online and attend up to seven in-person workshops at venues across the UK, including London, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, Nottingham and Bournemouth.

What hidden costs should I expect on top of the course fee?

Three other costs turn up in your first year as a personal trainer: insurance, a few personal items and, once you start coaching, gym rent. Each is much smaller than the course fee.

Insurance

Every reputable UK gym will ask for proof of insurance before you train clients on its floor. Most trainers buy a policy that combines public liability and professional indemnity. Prices depend on the level of cover and how you work, so get quotes from two or three specialist insurers before you qualify and budget for it from your first month.

Personal items, not equipment

New trainers often assume they need to buy their own kit. In most gyms the facility supplies the equipment, so your first-year spend is small: a uniform or branded clothing, business cards, and perhaps a coaching app. If you train clients outdoors or at home, add a foam roller and a few resistance bands.

Gym rent and other running costs

Self-employed personal trainers usually pay the gym a monthly rent and keep their session fees. Rent varies a great deal by gym and city, so ask the gym directly. CPD courses and marketing are optional extras you can add as your business grows. Our guide to self-employed and employed personal trainers explains how the money works on each route.

Resits

Ask every provider what a resit costs. On YOUR Academy courses, including the PT Career Accelerator and PT Essentials, resits are included at no extra cost. Elsewhere, a low headline price can turn into a mid-range one once resit and certificate fees are added.

Can you get funding for a personal trainer course?

Yes, depending on your situation. There are four routes worth checking.

ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits). For members and eligible leavers of the Armed Forces. The Enhanced Learning Credits scheme pays up to 80% of an approved course, up to £1,000 a claim on the lower tier or £2,000 on the higher tier, with up to three claims and one claim per financial year. Eligibility depends on your length of service and when you joined. YOUR Academy is an approved ELCAS provider; see our ELCAS PT courses page.

Apprenticeships. There's an approved Level 3 Personal trainer apprenticeship (ST0302). Your employer funds it, often through the Apprenticeship Levy, which employers with a pay bill over £3 million pay. If you already work in a gym or leisure centre, ask your employer.

Advanced Learner Loan. A government loan for eligible Level 3 to Level 6 courses, repaid through the student loan system once you earn over the threshold. Not every provider accepts it, so ask before you apply.

Paying in instalments. Many providers let you spread the cost of a personal trainer course, often at 0% interest. At YOUR Academy, PT Essentials costs £1,495: a £250 deposit, then 0% instalments over 6, 9 or 12 months, which is 12 monthly payments of £103.75 on the longest plan. The PT Career Accelerator costs £500, paid in full or as a £250 deposit plus three monthly payments. With any provider, check the 0% rate lasts for the whole term, and make sure you're told the total price and the monthly amount before you sign up.

How long does it take to earn back the cost of a personal trainer course?

The average personal trainer salary in the UK is £32,545 a year (Indeed UK, as of September 2026, based on 2,700 salaries reported). That's about £2,712 a month before tax, so a £500 course is covered by less than a week of average earnings. A £1,500 course takes around two and a half weeks, and a £2,000 course around three.

Those figures assume a full diary. In practice, self-employed trainers can take several months to build up to full earnings as they find clients, which is why support in the early months matters as much as the course fee. For how long the qualification itself takes, see our guide on how long it takes to become a personal trainer.

Which route is right for you?

The right course depends on what you're balancing alongside it.

Career changers

You want both levels in one course, with workshops and a clear path to earning. The PT Career Accelerator removes the "what happens next?" question. Our guide on changing career to personal training covers the move step by step.

School and college leavers

You need practical workshops, tutor support and a way into a working gym. The PT Career Accelerator and PT Essentials both fit. If you already work at a gym or leisure centre, ask your employer whether they fund training.

Working adults studying part-time

Format matters as much as price. Most YOUR Academy learners qualify in 5 to 9 months at around 10 hours of study a week, with up to 12 months allowed, so you can qualify without leaving your job. Online-only courses look cheaper, but you give up practical hours and tutor contact.

Military leavers

Check your ELCAS eligibility first, with your unit's Individual Education and Resettlement Officer. ELCAS can cover up to 80% of an approved course, which brings the cost of a full qualification down sharply. Then look at what's waiting for you after resettlement: a placement means a gym to work from as soon as you qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Is the £500 PT Career Accelerator a real personal trainer qualification?

Yes. It includes the Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications, approved by Transcend Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and YOUR Academy holds CIMSPA Enhancing Status. The price is lower because you commit to at least six months as a self-employed personal trainer with YOUR Personal Training once you qualify.

Can I pay for a personal trainer course in instalments?

Often, yes. At YOUR Academy, PT Essentials costs £1,495: a £250 deposit, then 0% instalments over 6, 9 or 12 months, for example 12 monthly payments of £103.75. The PT Career Accelerator is £500, paid in full or as a £250 deposit plus three monthly payments. With any provider, check the 0% rate lasts for the whole term.

Do I need to pay for Level 2 before I start Level 3?

You need Level 2 first, but you don't have to buy it separately. Most providers sell the two together for less. PT Essentials at YOUR Academy saves £566 against the standalone prices. If you already hold Level 2 Gym Instructor, you can go straight to Level 3.

Is a guaranteed interview the same as a guaranteed placement?

No. A guaranteed interview gives you a chance to apply for a job. A guaranteed placement is a place to work once you qualify. Several gym-chain academies offer an interview. The YOUR Academy PT Career Accelerator includes a placement.

Are online-only personal trainer courses cheaper?

Usually, yes, because they cost less to deliver. The trade-off is fewer practical hours and less tutor contact, which matters most if you're new to coaching. All YOUR Academy courses are blended, with online study and in-person workshops.

Is a personal trainer course tax-deductible?

Not usually for your first qualification. GOV.UK lets self-employed people claim training that improves skills they already use in their business, but not training to move into a new line of work. Once you're working as a personal trainer, CPD courses that build on your existing skills are normally allowable. Check the guidance or ask an accountant before you claim.
