The cheapest way for most people to become a personal trainer in the UK is YOUR Academy's PT Career Accelerator at £500, in return for working at least six months as a self-employed personal trainer on a guaranteed placement at one of 420+ UK gyms and health clubs. It includes the Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, and it's built for people who want a PT career, not just a certificate.

Why is YOUR Academy's PT Career Accelerator the cheapest way to qualify?
At £500, YOUR Academy's PT Career Accelerator costs less than any other paid course we know of that includes both qualifications and a guaranteed placement. It includes the Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications, expert in-person workshops, blended online learning and a guaranteed placement at one of 420+ UK gyms and health clubs. It's the UK's only personal training course with a guaranteed job placement.
You can pay the £500 in full, or pay a £250 deposit and then three monthly payments of £83.34, £83.33 and £83.33. Resits are included at no extra cost.
Why is the PT Career Accelerator only £500?
The price is lower because the course is built around a placement. In return, you commit to working as a self-employed personal trainer with YOUR Personal Training for at least six months after you qualify. Your first six weeks there carry no gym rent, so you can build a client base before facility costs start.
The same Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications cost £1,495 on YOUR Academy's PT Essentials, which has no placement commitment. So the difference is the placement, not the quality of the course. Both are taught by YOUR Academy, which holds CIMSPA Enhancing Status, the highest of CIMSPA's three quality tiers. The courses are bespoke, built by Kevin Baker and approved by Transcend Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation.
Is the £500 route right for you?
The PT Career Accelerator is right for you if you want to qualify properly and start working straight away, and you're happy to commit to a six-month placement. It isn't for people who want to qualify quickly and cheaply and then see what happens, or who only want to dabble in personal training.

Can you become a personal trainer for free in the UK?
A few people can qualify without paying course fees, but only through specific routes, and each comes with a catch. In England, you can qualify without paying course fees through college at 16 to 18, a funded first Level 3 at 19 to 23, or an apprenticeship. The funding rules below apply to England, apart from ELCAS, which is a Ministry of Defence scheme. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own schemes.
If you're 16 to 18
Colleges can't charge you tuition fees. Under the government's 16 to 19 funding rules, colleges fund approved qualifications, which can include gym instructing and personal training, so a college course on the approved list is free. The catch is time: you study at the college's pace, alongside other subjects.
If you're 19 to 23 and don't have a full Level 3 yet
Your first full Level 3 can be fully funded, whatever you earn, under the Adult Skills Fund rules. The catch is that only certain personal training qualifications are on the government's approved list, and only providers with Adult Skills Fund contracts can offer them free. If you don't yet have a full Level 2, your first full Level 2 can be fully funded at 19 to 23 too. Ask the college or provider directly whether your course qualifies.
Through an apprenticeship
As an apprentice, you don't pay for your training, and you're paid while you learn. There's an approved Level 3 Personal trainer apprenticeship that takes around 15 months, plus assessment. The catch: you need a gym or leisure operator to employ you first, so you have to find a vacancy.
If you're unemployed or on a low wage
Level 2 courses, including gym instructing, can be fully funded under the Adult Skills Fund if you're unemployed or earn under £26,800 a year (the 2026 to 2027 threshold). Ask your Jobcentre work coach too. If you're claiming benefits, Jobcentre Plus can sometimes help with training costs through its discretionary Flexible Support Fund.
If you're leaving the Armed Forces
The Enhanced Learning Credits scheme pays up to 80% of an approved Level 3 or above course, up to £1,000 a claim on the lower tier or £2,000 on the higher tier. YOUR Academy is an approved ELCAS provider; see our ELCAS PT courses page.

Start with your ELCAS eligibility, through your unit's Individual Education and Resettlement Officer. A placement on the PT Career Accelerator then gives you a gym to work from as soon as you qualify.

The commitment. You agree to work as a self-employed personal trainer on your placement for at least six months after you qualify. In return you get a guaranteed placement, no gym rent for your first six weeks, a mentor and a free business course. If you don't want to commit to a placement, PT Essentials gives you the same qualifications for £1,495.
What's the least I need to pay upfront?
£250. On the PT Career Accelerator, you can pay a £250 deposit and then three monthly payments of £83.34, £83.33 and £83.33, so the full £500 is spread over four payments. On PT Essentials, the deposit is also £250, with the balance spread over 6, 9 or 12 months at 0%, for example 12 monthly payments of £103.75.
How quickly can I earn back the cost?
Quickly, once you're working. The average personal trainer salary in the UK is £32,487 a year (Indeed UK, as of October 2026, based on 2,800 salaries reported), about £2,707 a month before tax. At that rate, a £500 course is covered by less than a week of average earnings, though building a full client base takes time.
Can I get funding for a personal trainer course if I'm over 23?
Possibly, depending on your situation. If you're unemployed or earn under £26,800 a year, Level 2 courses such as gym instructing can be fully funded. An apprenticeship is free at any age from 16 if an employer takes you on. Armed Forces members and eligible leavers can use ELCAS. You can also apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for an approved Level 3 course, repaid once you earn over the threshold.
